👋
I’ve wanted to get chickens for 20 years, but for various reasons it was never the right time. Last year, we moved to north Idaho to support my spouse’s parents as they age in place. They had 22 acres, so they sold 5 of it to us and we’ve been working on getting a house built, garden established, and…space for chickens! I was planning on making things simple in this first go-round and just get day-old chicks. However, my MIL is almost as excited as I am and bought me an incubator for Christmas. Well, can’t disappoint her! Our first chick, a Buff Orpington, hatched last night, and the rest of the clutch of Orps and Barred Plymouth Rocks have been making their appearance one by one. 7 hatched and two more currently working on their zips; where the incubator is located, I can’t see if the other three have pipped or not. Second batch of eggs has arrived and is just waiting in an empty (and sanitized) incubator to get started.

Since the house isn’t quite finished yet, we’re still living in our travel trailer. Having the incubator in here, with two adults, two large dogs, and a very active cat, has been an interesting challenge, but it’s worked out so far. 😁
