The dresdens are not actually "hard", they require total attention to the seam as any off sized seam will show in the finished work and you need to cut them precicely, like any other block, otherwise not hard really. The center is applique, I sew it to interfacing and flip it so my ends are tucked in and I do the same when I make rounded edge dresdens...which I will be doing again as the pointed ones are truly alot of trouble to turn all the ends under and sew down..I think the biggest thing about dresdens people dont think about is that they are twice as costly as a regular block because you use a piece of interfacing and in addition you need a solid 12.5 inch piece of fabric to put the completed work onto..that means twice the fabric so it is more expensive but they really are my favorite. I hope everyone likes the 6 pointed diamond shaped stars I made this month, branching out a bit, lol!!

Scramble you are right about the attention to detail on the Dreden. I didn't use interfaceing in mine, the direction I used didn't say anything about useing it. I can see where it would help on the rounded ones. A friend at church order a pink and purple crib size Dresden to give as a shower gift. Any ways I took it to work last night to sew the 12 plates together. I got done way to soon so I was messing with the patteren and made this one

I was tring to do something for the corner of the blockes. After I make the 6 I'll need I will NEVER make any more that small ever. The full size blockes are really easy to do they just take a lot of time to do.

Yeah I do..thanks SE..but I probably do mine different..quick explanation..the piece is a slight rectangle..2 1/2 x 2 1/4..right sides together..sew across narrow end.. flip seam to the wrong side..this forms the point of the dresden..lay your pattern on top and cut sides..when you sew two pieces together you have to open up the fold over and put just a few stitches..it sounds complicated but isn't at all..I got this from the book "Leisure Arts Quick and Easy scrap Quilts"

Cedar I do mine just about the same way. The only thing is the time it takes. As I did them I got faster same as any other block. I like trying new patterns. This is a easy one to do.

I don't believe I sew my dresdens the same way? I cut out all the pieces and lay two of them right sides facing together and sew a teeny seam, open them and lay another on top of the one on the right and sew it down and open it out..on and on until I get to the last one. If the ends are pointed I have to turn them under and pin them. I pull the pins out later as I am sewing down the hem. The center I always flip with interfacing as turning under a hem on a circle is way too hard otherwise, for me anyway! I guess there must be several ways to make these, maybe that's why people are frightened off?

Yes..the way Piecemaker and I do it, works really well on the small ones..no pinning./basting those small points..I would probably do it "the old way" for the large ones..
