2013 Texas Chickenstock June 8, 2013

LOl-My chickens will be there.

The Texas Chickenstock is not a swap meet, but if you purchase eggs or birds from someone and want to pick them up at Chickenstock, that is OK. Just don't bring birds to sell/swap on speculation.

I am looking for poultry exhibitions/shows in SE Texas. I'm between Houston and Beaumont, and all I have found are livestock shows with meat pens, no other breeds.

Would love to attend but I'm a bit far, 1 hour NW of Fort Worth. Maybe in the future after I'm a bit more established, or if I see a closer event.

Hi Allen,
Thanks for posting about the Texas Chickenstock event on June 8th. It sounds awesome. I'm a Newbie and would sure like to learn more. My first chicks ever arrived 3 weeks ago and I just love them. I live in the NW Houston area, but alway looking for a reason to visit Austin because my daughter's family lives in Round Rock and I can stay with them. Can you please elaborate on how to sign up and what I should bring?
Have a Blessed day,
Linda Fath

Linda,
Welcome to BYC. We were all newbies at one time. Chickenstock is a good place to ask questions and learn.

I will put you down as coming. Just show up with a covered dish on June 8.

New Information:

Our special guest this year is Alfredo Geigel, DVM. He is the owner of Vida Veterinary Mobile Services, and is bringing his mobile set-up for everyone to see. This is a great opportunity to meet a veterinarian who knows chickens AND makes house calls.

Dr. Geigel has agreeded to answer our chicken questions, but would like to receive the questions in advance in case he needs to do some additional research. Please ask your questions in this thread and I will see that Dr. Geigel gets them.

DETAILS:
Please bring a generous dish to feed your family plus a few more. I will supply plates, cups, ice, napkins, utensils, coffee, tea and lemonade. Please bring anything else you wish to drink. We will eat around 11:30 - 12:00.

If you made plans with others to pick-up birds or eggs at Chickenstock, that is fine. I have some shaded areas and water for them. However, please practice bio-security at all times.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Allen Wranch on June 8.

Hi,
I have a question for the veterinarian, but since I'm a newbie, others may already know this answer without bothering him/her. Here's my question: If I bring one chicken out of my flock to the vet (in the future, not at this meetup), can he/she tell me if she is desease free enough to eat raw eggs from her? I would like to make my own mayo and I understand that it depends on the health of the chicken if that is safe enough. My flock is in a very clean, large free-range area. They are only 3 1/2 weeks old now, so it is too soon to bring the vet a chicken. But I'm just wondering if that is possible in the future. Also, if I bring him one chicken, will that be a good indicator as to the health of the flock of about 20 chickens? I know you mentioned that this vet does house calls, but I live in the NW Houston area, so unless the vet is coming here for another reason, I don't think that is practical.
Thanks,
Linda Fath
