2014 breeding season begins, post your results

One of my IB hens just went broody so I gave her seven eggs from my BS pen. I hope there is not TOO much commotion in that pen, it is time to let the young cocks out for free ranging but not until after this round of medicated water is over. She decided to set way in the back corner of the coop, so I think she will have enough peace and quiet.

Ok thank you. I would have thought if she let these get cold then they would not be viable.
When they are doing the "Practice sitting" I don't think they really get the eggs warm enough to start the development process. Those eggs have to get to about 99.6 degrees before that starts and I don't think they can get that warm in a matter of hours. I have had hens sit for most of the day and then get off and perch on a roost over night. They did this for several days before they started to stay on the nest overnight, the eggs did fine anyway.

If she is against a wall you could prop a half sheet of plywood over her area, i did this with a hen that layed in the new pea pen i was working on to keep the rain off of her and give her some privacy.

Good thought, I just may do that. The peas do not go into the coop much except to eat the dry food we keep in there, for the most part they like to stay outside and roost outside even in the winter. I keep thinking that it my get real hot in there next month, it only has one window and one door, so far the wind has been horrendous but that will change.

This is weird or maybe it is normal my pied hen who is 1yr in August laid an egg in the guinea nest and now will not let the guineas near it. The egg is infertile my male is 1 yr old. I am learning all this long distance I 'm on vacation. My daughter is taking care of my birds. My guineas are penned up and not able to free range since no one is there.

24 hours old.

So, I got a little curious this morning and decided to see how many miles it would be if I decided to take a road trip and visit these little guys that Kathy hatched from my eggs. By car it would be a 2846 mile trip!

So finally I can post my initial hatch. One lonely white chick, offspring from the 2 yr old peach BS hen I imported in the spring. She is currently held in a misfits pen, undergoing continued quarantine till I decide who she is going to be bred with next year. Father is likely a BS w/e or a cameo split peach, but I'm leaning toward the BS male, as I'm pretty certain he was out of a pen that produced charcoal sp. Of the first 50 eggs, my fertility for two yr old males continues to disappoint, with a mere 40% fertility. I have a beauty bssp male with a great tail, 12 eggs from the 5 yr old bronze hen, with 0 fertile. I also have a 2 yr old BS male split to multiple colours that I'm getting 90%+ fertility and he's in with three hens (1 four yr old and 2 two yr olds). At least the latter male hasn't disappointed, I'm hoping for a prosperous hatch from him.

Ok, not completely lonely, it has two lakenvelder friends to keep it company till it's cousins arrive (pic coming soon).
