2014 breeding season begins, post your results

IMO that second picture is adorable. I ended up with 4 healthy Barnevelder chicks out of my ebay eggs. The last one wouldn't come out so I waited until this morning and then assisted, unfortunately it had a developmental defect and I had to cull. First time for that, so I'm still a bit off about it. But the other 4 are doing well, although it looks like 2 and maybe 3 are Roos.

At this rate it will take me 10 years to get a nice little egg laying flock together.
Congrats on the chicks, but sorry you had to cull and sorry so many might be roos, that's usually what happens to me.

Quote: Maybe it's the bone-chilling wind, lol? Will probably get #3 and #4 tonight. Curiously, what do you feed your peas?

It's been windy here too in the foothills, and my coop is open air so my birds have been getting blasted. I'm surprised my Boy was able to hop on and connect with his Girls while fighting the wind, but apparently he's very determined and got the job done regardless, lol.

All my Peas are on a main diet of 24% protein Game Bird pellets with a handful of scratch grains and sweet feed/wet cob mixed in, and then they have free choice to 2nd or 3rd cutting alfalfa hay and as much kale, weeds and green grasses that I can pull/pick for them... but in Feb some time after I wormed them I also started giving them a feed pan full of Fermented Feed 3-4 times a week (which consists mostly of the 24% protein Game Bird pellets, some sweet feed/wet cob and scratch grains and a bunch of alfalfa pellets... and that all ferments at least 48 hrs before I feed it) and I also add a handful of Ultra Kibble and or catfish diet, a cup or so of plain greek yogurt and usually 10-12 smashed up boiled eggs (shell and all) mixed into the FF right before I feed it to them. Occasionally when I process a Turkey they will also get all of the (raw) organ meats diced up and added in too. They always gobble it all down.

Oh and they also have free choice to oystershell and pigeon grit which has added minerals in it (plus there's a little oyster shell in it too).

Thanks for the reply, what brand of feeds and grit are you using, I'd like to look ino availability of them.

-Kathy
The 24%, sweet feed/wet cob and alfalfa pellets are all Bar Ale brand (from a feed mill in Williams, but I buy them locally at a feed store in Grass Valley). I've already tossed the pigeon grit bag, but I need to get more soon so I'll let you know the brand when I do... I'm assuming that it also comes from Bar Ale, but I am not 100% sure on that. I buy the Ultra Kibble and the catfish diet (Sportsman's Choice) at Tractor Supply in Yuba City.

Think I forgot to mention that I set my first two eggs under my Buff Japanese hen yesterday.

And here are the fluffed up ducklings from yesterday, plus one I found in a nest today.
