2026 Emu Hatch-Along

Congratulations!! A baby girl! What color?

My dna tests should arrive today so hopefully the lab has a quick turnaround so I can see how accurate I was.

I didn't even get around to egg weights this weekend. I was so busy and I had one of the little blonde emus that started to go downhill, doing somersaults, unbalanced and kept tucking his head under his body. I took him to a gal in the neighboring town who is a vet tech and has emu of her own for many years. She has studied extensively about emus and learned everything she could because nobody really wants to work with them in the vet world. Thankfully she's going to school to become a vet and they will be your focus as well as other birds.

She assessed him and was able to help me determine how to try and get him back on track. She gave me so much good information and I learned a lot. It was a vitamin deficiency coming on with the yolk having been absorbed and him not really eating. She taught me how to tube feed him which is an invaluable skill that I'm so thankful to have been shown. Happy to report that this morning less than 24 hours after starting the tubing of food and vitamins and he already looks so much better. He even had 2 poops!! You know you are on a farm farm when animal poop is exciting! That was one of her biggest concerns with whether or not he would survive is if his bowels had shut down already. She said it was a Hail Mary, but did have hope for him.

This morning he stood up right away , a little off balance but no somersaulting. He immediately started drinking his Vitamin Water. I have food out that he pecks at but I will still tube feed for a few more days for sure. I am hopeful!
