24/7 food?

I was told to keep food and water out of the coop at nite. why they told me that, i am not sure, but it seemd to work for me. i dont heat or light the coop at nite.

Mine have food 24/7. I have a pvc feeder inside the tractor and find there is virtually no mess/waste feeding them this way. My girls get laying pellets and any and all leftovers that we dont want. I also throw in a couple of handfuls of boss in the morning so they scratch around and turn over their litter. I also have a hanging waterer inside the tractor. They use it in the mornings before I get out to let them out and on crappy days when they want to be inside instead of in their run. One thing I have started doing is shopping the back of the fruit and vege aisle for discounted produce that is still okay but not saleable with the regular stuff. I get stuff really cheap and supplement with that. Since your husband is laid off and money is tight, why not check with the local supermarkets and produce stands to see about getting their discards cheap or for free? Nothing to lose by asking!! Might also want to ask any bakeries for stuff as well. Every little bit helps and as long as you balance their regular feed with these things, they should do well.
