Here it is!! FINALLY!!! The eggs I was promised from the neighbor lady down the street! 24 eggs of mixed breeding. I have a couple of pictures to share, and hope y'all like them.
First, here's the full set of two dozen that went in at roughly 11:30 AM PST.
Next, here is a picture of one of the dads, a BR cross of some kind. He has the most beautiful shading of a golden hue on his shoulders. Just a beautiful boy if you ask me. According to Dawn (the neighbor lady who donated these eggs for my first attempt at hatching) this is the dominant roo of the flock to the best of her knowledge.
Here's another view of him:
Their hens consist of a few BR's, RIR, BA, one LB that I saw...I think they only have the one...a couple of EE's and something of a mutt that I couldn't tell what she was!
Here's a picture of one of the other roosters in this flock. There are a total of three roo's, the third is a RIR, which I believe you can see in the background to the left of this big boy. If anyone knows what breed this handsome fellow is, I'd love to be so informed. I have not a single clue and Dawn didn't know what he is either! But, he's pretty in my eyes!
Here's one more picture of Mr. Mystery Roo:
Dawn and her husband have said that if I'd like to have this mystery rooster, I'm more than welcome to him! And yes! I'd love to have him.
My plan of action for integrating this big boy into our flock will be to build an add on to the girls coop, with a separate run area. It could also later be used as a quality quarantine area for any future additions to the flock. Especially of adult birds. The add on quarantine area will allow the two sides to be able to see each other, but not allow direct contact. Hopefully our girls will like my choice of boyfriends for them and accept him with open wings into the flock.
I sure hope they will! If not, then it's back to Dawn and Brandon's place. And sadly, that will be his last stop before hitting the Sunday dinner table.
I'm already in love with this little man and sure don't want to see that happen to him. So, keep your fingers crossed that our girls will accept him so that he may live a long and happy life here with us!
OK, back to the eggs. One last shot and then we've got everything buttoned up for now.
First candling will be on day 10 on the 23rd of this month if my counting is correct. If it's not, somebody please slap me and let me know!!!
Second candling will be on the 2nd of March as that should be day 17. Then the next day they all go into lock down!!! Projected hatching date is Saturday March 6, 2010
I can hardly wait!!!
As always, any advice or admonitions are eagerly welcomed and encouraged! Thanks gang! I would never have contemplated this next step in chicken keeping were it not for all of the friendly, knowledgeable and helpful folks here at BYC. Your experience and willingness to share in those experiences has given me the confidence that I too can do this!!! So, take my hand, and with your gracious help, I'll make it through the next 21+ days in one piece and with sanity still intact!!
