Probably a more foolproof solution, and one particularly well suited to northern winters, however, is to add all your lighting BEFORE DAWN (on a timer). For instance from 3 a.m. to 7 am. (the exact numbers depending when the sun comes up and how much daylength you're shooting for). That way they experience natural dusk in the evenings... AND your lamp's heat is all provided during the coldest part of the day (i.e. just before dawn) when it will do the most good.

If this is a matter of you going out to do chores, turning on the light, then having to turn it off when you leave, I would suggest a headlamp, that is much less apt to get them to pop down off the roost.

We've left lights on 24/7 for generations. Its usually only in the coldest months, and the light is more for heat than anything. In all the many years we've done this, I've never had aggression, not sleeping, etc.
