Hi all,

As you may have seen on my other thread, my mystery duck egg (likely Silver/Blue Swedish or Fawn-and-White Runner) internally pipped yesterday morning at Day 23. Since then, he hasn't made any progress though he's still rocking in his shell when I checked this morning. I've noticed some people say after 24 hours of internal pip, but no external it's time to put in a safety hole. I'll be honest, I'm really nervous about puncturing the baby and he's still fairly active (I think I heard a very faint chirp this morning, but have yet to hear anything else). He had a very large air cell right before he pipped (image below), so could I possibly give him more time before externally pipping? I just want to know what my absolute drop-dead time is to give him a safety hole before seeing an external pip. He's SO early that I don't want to jump the gun if he isn't ready, but is there any harm in helping him with an air hole?

Morning of Day 24 (There's also an orange/brown spot I noticed on the egg yesterday when I candled the internal pip that's new. Anything to be concerned about?)

By the nature of my Magicfly Incubator, I can't see the top so I can't confirm with 100% certainty that he didn't pip up above, but I tried to look at him from all angles with a flashlight and didn't see anything. Humidity is at 65% and temp is holding around 98.8

I've just got the one so naturally I'm a little overprotective and really pulling for this little guy to make it through without any issues. :fl He's so early, so I'm worried he's not properly developed! Want to be sure I give him the best shot I can!!

I think I would just leave him. I don't like doing safety holes, because tgats what encourages them to pip. I've had some that I do safety holes on and they just go lazy and die. I like to make them work a little. Just keep an eye on him. I would open the incubator and see if there are any pips. It won't hurt anything. I have tgat same incubator and I have to open it a ton during lockdown. I just mist the eggs (egg) with warm water right before I close the incubator to help the humidity come back up.

Okay, thanks! I can definitely still hear him tapping and moving a little bit, so I want to give him a chance. Again, he's early so he may just need a little more time... just so long as he doesn't suffocate! :jumpy

As anxious as I am, I really haven't heard him peep yet, so maybe he was pressing against the air cell but didn't full internally pip yet. (I think he did), but in any case... Going to give him some more time and if by tonight he hasn't externally pipped, I will give him an air hole.

Sounds good! I used to confuse the shadowing and internal pips a lot. Its easy to do. I bet you're right. I'd give him a few hours yet. Do you hear any peeping now? If you tap the shell and whistle and get all excited and then hold it up to your ear you'll probably hear a peep.

No peeping but when I candled him, his beak was right up against the shell and poking at me trying to get through (no external yet, but he's trying!), so I sprayed him and put him back in. He's trying!!

His air cell still looked okay, so I think he's still got some oxygen to go. Come on, little guy!! :fl

That's good. C'mon baby! Come meet your mommy!

Update - we have an external pip!!! :wee 48 hours after the internal pip - sheesh! Now the quick developer decides to take his time. Day 25! Guess we can expect him in the next day or so. :D

Still no chirping, but I'm sure once he breaks free a bit more he'll be more chatty. I'll just keep talking to him in the meantime and let my roommates give me looks. (Though secretly they love this)

Update: he's been making lots of external pips since this morning and looks like he's rotating in the shell. They seem pretty superficial / I haven't seen him break the membrane yet. Is that okay? It almost looks like he's trying to zip, but from a weird angle?

Might he malpositioned? Should I be prepared to help him? I never put a safety hole in, I've been trying to let him do things on his own since he's still only Day 25 and may not be ready yet. He's not a very active egg - still haven't heard a peep out of him and he more trembles rather than rocks like I've seen before.

I'm probably being overprotective. :) But any advice is helpful to talk me off the duck ledge. :th
