25-40 chicken set up? Coop ideas?

We are going to get back into chickens again finally...

Whats the best set up for a larger flock?

I'd like to be able to segregate by breed... and free range most of the time except when segregated for breeding.

Basically a big coop to hold em all, then large breeding pens.

Then you want a big "shed" type structure with multiple doors - one on each wall - each entering into its own fenced area.

If you are doing fewer breeds, you can make one of the sides your access area and partition things differently inside. Do keep in mind that you will have to partition inside the structure too - so the building will need to be bigger than the "minimum" to account for extra wall space and wasted corners. Should have a way to access all the runs w/o having to go in and out of the buildding multiple times, too. Meaning multiple gates, most likely.


How many breeds do you plan to keep - you are alread talking about a building 12x12 minimum, 16x16 is probably better.

If just three breeds, since you are in TX, consider a wide, relatively narrow three sided shed, back wall into your prevaling winter wind inspired by an adirondack type design, and extend the runs right off the face as an open air coop design.
