They look for secluded places to lay eggs. The whole point (to their little chicken brains, anyway) is to keep the eggs concealed long enough to have a clutch large enough to set. My acreage isn't that large or wooded, but anyplace with tall grass, shrubs, in the blackberry bushes or under a big zucchini plant was fair game. So was the hay barn, an old trash can, the compost pile, an old junker car, the pickup bed, the dog food sack, the boat, the woodpile, the corner of the horses stall, the horses feed trough............we found eggs everywhere.
