Well originally I was planning on getting 6 hens in a 25 sq. ft coop with a 100 sq ft run. Now they will be in the run and coop when I'm not home and when I'm home i intend to turn them out to range. So i guess the question is will a coop 8' x 3.5' be sufficient for 8 large breed hens?

The rule of thumb is 4 sq ft per chicken so I'd say your coop will be a little small but it really depends on your location, if the nest boxes are external or not and how much time you chickens will spend in the coop. A production hen has a 10 in. x 10 in. space and they live but just barely.
My coop is 4x6 and the covered run is 6x15, the only time my hens are in the coop is to roost and lay eggs, they rarely free-range because of roaming dogs. Good luck and enjoy your chickens

yeah I'm guessing ill stick with 6. i live out in the country i own just 3 acres but have prob lots of open range around me. I'm worried a bit about the coons and loose dogs and such. But around here once they come around they not "around" too long if u get my drift! Hell i know folks they go as far as shooting birds of prey outta the sky to protect there flock.
