28 Week Welsummers and still no eggs

Almost 32 weeks now. Leia's comb and wattles are larger and redder now and almost as large and red as Luna's. No eggs yet but I notice they're starting to munch a little oyster shell. Even though they're slow to start laying, I really enjoy this breed and am getting 4 more 10 week old pullets this coming weekend.

42 weeks and Leia finally laid an egg! Luna has not yet, even though she looked closer to POL for the last 3 months. I've got 3 more Welsummers that are 20 weeks old. I expect they'll lay a bit sooner than 42 weeks, since the days are getting longer instead of shorter. The egg was very nice-not super small and nice hard shell. LOTS of dots!

The body weight matters. Small birds with less fat tends to lay later. Check body weight, comb size, fat deposit, feathering and you will find our why.

Not concerned why. It was heading into short days as they were getting close to POL. They are fed 22% protein flock raiser, probiotics, very small amounts of sunflower seeds and mealworms. They are healthy active birds good feathering, combs & wattles bright. Good weight at almost 5 lbs. Just weren't ready to lay yet. I was very happy with how nice the first egg was.
