Hello, i have 1 Rhode Island Red and 1 Black Langshan, both are females and they are not laying yet. I have 2 EE that are laying eggs. They are on layer, grit, free range, and get scratch grains here & there. They are happy. Is it lack of lighting? Day light is about 9 1/2 hours a day. Thanks for any input.

Hens need approximately 15 hours of daylight to think the season is right for reproduction. You need one 60 watt incandescent bulb, 7 feet from the floor for around 200 square meters of coop. Place the bulb over feeders away from nesting boxes. A timer works best as it will shut it off in the morning light and turn on at dusk and off for the needed 6-8 hours of dark rest. However if you forget for a few days the hens may go into molt.

If you keep them free range, they may lay somewhere else, did you check?
