2nd night in the coop and i'm up at 3 a.m.

So funny that we all go out checking on the chicks! Mine are just over four weeks old and went out permanently in the coop this past weekend. First night, I got up at 2:15 to go check on them and ran into my son as he stepped back into the house. Scared us both and he said "The chickens are fine, I just was out there checking on them" Asked him if he was what all the dogs in the neighborhood were barking at and he said that their barking was what got him up. ( But I had to go on out to the coop to see them myself!)

Oh, that's funny that you two ran into each other..swapping 'babysitting' duty! Glad to know I'm not the only lunatic up at all hours of the nite.

homechick, you are a hoot!

I have three cats and I see them stalking the grown chickens sometimes, and yes, I am running throwing dirt clots at them while yelling like a banchee

But after watching the cats for some time...they are intimidated by the large birds. I have seen the roo come towards the cats and the cats freak out. But little ones, I am sure would be another story.

mom'sfolly :

My girls have been in the coop a little over a week. The last thing I do before bed is check on them. The first couple of nights even my dh went to check. All I ever see is 7 linear feet of roost and four pullets squeezed on on foot of length.

. They obviously don't know they need 1 1/2-2 feet each. Silly chickens.

Here I was wondering when mine would figure out that they're supposed to sleep on the roosts (instead of just using them for a jungle gym during the day). They've now split into 2 groups. I peeked the other night, and 3 were in one nestbox, 2 were on the divider between that box and the one next to it, and 2 more were on the perch in front of the nest box. (It reminded me of college kids squeezing into a VW) The rest were sacked out in a little line on the floor, right next to their chickie door, just waiting for it to be light so they could run out again.

Oh mY Goddess!!!
I have SOOO done this myself...
I'd put them in and then every half hour or so until bed I'd check on them and then I'd go out ever hour or so and I'd turn up the baby monitor so loud that I could hear an ant break wind...
