Hi, I am Stephanie. I live in southern California where it is hot! We bought our farm 2 years ago and got 3 hens as chicks. A silver laced wyndenette named Diva, a Delaware named Mrs.Kay and a Rhode Island red named Ruby. We also inherited a hound puppy, who found our beautiful hens while we were away and he killed all 3! :-( lessen learned. RIP our feathered girls. Xoxo
Anyways. We are trying again. We have secured a location away from our hound and other creatures. We have 3 Rhode Island reds that are almost 4 weeks old. The place we got them from only guaranteed sex accuracy to 80%.we cannot have roosters as we are still in city limits. If anyone can assist in looking at them at this point and telling me if there is a way to know if they are female? They are all so sweet. Beginning to love up on my daughters and chase bugs. Very entertaining. I just fear the goodbyes if they end up being roosters.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Your picture would make even the most expert scratching their head. It is a little difficult to determine from viewing this photo. They are still young. But on the positive side. If they say 80% accuracy, then you just might have all pullets. Above all, keep Fido away from flock. or do what I just suggested to a previous poster. REPLACE...

With one of these.

I am by no means an expert, but in my experience wattles at that age is a good Rooster sign, hate to say so though, we also live in city limits, though we may or may not have a tiny young rooster for right now XD

Congrats on your new chicks and sorry to hear about your loss. One of our dogs got one of our newly hatched chicks recently and now they're not allowed out with the chickens. Poor baby.

There isn't really a great way to tell sex until they're a little older. Do any of them seem to be developing at a different rate? I suspect I have a roo on my latest group because "he's" completely difference from my other brahma.

There is one that is very sweet on me. Hehe! And a bit bigger. But nothing more stands out. Here are some better pictures a little closer. Thank u

Now I havent had babies in a few months but none of my little girls that stayed girls got wattled like in the first picture. This set of pictures is more hopeful ^^

The things on the top of their beaks are called wattles? Right? What is the little thing beneath the chin/beak called on roosters? I have been looking for extra skin flap and I really don't see any yet. But again could be too soon at 4 weeks.

All chickens (besides a few like Chanteclers) get Wattles and Combs, it doesn't rely on gender. You see the wattle the day the chick is born and the wattles should come in on a average hen about 2-4 months old depending on breed.

Oh thanks for clarifying. I had it wrong! Lol. So I heard some say if the crest is larger or redder it could be male. What do you think of my 3 ?
