2yo hen visibly gasping and labored breathing and making a very loud 'bgawk' sound frequently as she breathes. No bubbles, discharge, sneezing, liquid anything else respiratory related apparent. Appeared healthy yesterday.

No we checked. Crop is soft. Nothing visible in mouth.

No its now pitch black and raining/sleeting outside. Crop felt soft, not empty, and nothing was visible in mouth as far as we could see.

Is she struggling or is she able to walk around, eat and drink? Sometimes they can get a small piece of food in the airway, and it causes a sound called stridor. But if she is struggling to breathe, I would look into her beak and throat for any obstruction or any yellow gunk. Is her lower belly enlarged? This is what stridor sounds like:
