Yesterday morning went out and saw 2 brown small broken eggs under the roosts, dang. The shells were like paper, no one had taken any samples which was good. I came out about an hour later and there was a perfect small green egg in a depression they usually dust bathe in from one of the EE's, If I could have I would have jumped for joy (I really wanted a green egg layer). Nothing today so far.
I figure they were hatched march 18/19 as I bought them 1st day of spring at Murdochs and they came in that morning. So they should be in the neighborhood of 19/20 weeks, right on schedule.
Did not hear any egg songs till yesterday afternoon, it had just started raining so it was a bit loud on their tarp cover and the commotion that started in their pen was so loud I had to go out to see what was the matter. Nothing seemed to be going on except every pullet was standing straight up with their necks as high as they could reach and possibly frightened/???? looks on their faces...it was one of the RIR's with a really loud egg song, but no egg! Shes been terribly interested in the nest box and if I get anywhere near it or stick my hands in it she starts a big clucking fuss.
Now if I can ever figure out how to get the video of the song off my phone I could post it.
I read in Temple Grandins new book that chickens really like to hide to lay so I bought some denim to make curtains with...... I am also going to enrich their lives with some denim ropes hanging down in the pen to peck at.
