I have a 3 mo old nigerian doe that I've had for 4 days who is crying like crazy when she can't see me. I know a friend would help her out but I don't have another goat. I do however have plenty of ducks who prefer my other animals instead of their duck-mates like the pot belly pig or chickens. Can I put one of them in with her? They aren't mean at all! Any other suggestions are great appreciated!!

Why would you get one goat when you couldn't get a pair? I'm certain I've seen you cruising many of the goat based topics, so you should know that they are herd animals. The breeder who sold her to you must be very irresponsible to sell a single kid to a home with no other goats.

No, a duck isn't going to improve her situation. She is a goat, she won't see a duck as a fellow member of her 'herd'. A single goat is, as you've found out, is a loud and stressed out goat. I implore that you get a second goat as soon as possible. And if this isn't feasible, then you really aren't providing her what she needs.

FYI, I know a Nigerian Dwarf breeder in Mayville, MI who has three Nigerian Dwarf doe kids for sale. She is about three hours from you. Two are $225 and one is $300, and they are AGS and ADGA registrable.

I AM going to get another goat soon just not now until we finish remodeling the runs. The plan was for me to take her in later but it's a long story how I have her now. Her twin who lives with the breeder is a few houses from us so they see each other often. We put a radio in with her and she's doing much better.

BTW, I am well aware that they are herd animals, I grew up with them on my sister's ranch. I don't believe you have seen me in any goat topics, I wouldn't have any reason to be there. Maybe, but I don't remember.

If I was irresponsible then I wouldn't have re-homed other animals to make my home and finances open for goats. Maybe you should find out someone's situation before lambasting them.

I am sorry. I came off way too harshly. My irritation got the best of me, I try not to do that but let it win this time. I guess I saw one too many folks trying to keep a goat singly, resulting in a miserable animal, and I took it out on you.

I do hope that you can get a buddy soon. Goats really do best as a part of a herd, it is the best thing for their well being, their health, and stress level. If it is temporary, she'll do OK. Please give her as much attention as possible in the meantime, she needs it. A human doesn't really replace the companionship another herd animal can provide, but it helps.
