I was given a 3 month old pair of Russian Orloffs. The hen is weak and can't balance to walk. I didn't notice a problem yesterday as the 2 birds are in a large cage together and she did eat yesterday morning. Today, she didn't come up to get breakfast. I put probiotics in their water immediately, then I brought her in and drenched her with about 15ccs of water w/sugar and probiotics (as she didn't want to drink either). 2 hours later I gave about the same, then mashed up a 1/4 of a hard-boiled egg, mixed with a TBS of plain yogurt. She liked the mixture and perked up enough to peck it off the end of the syringe. I noticed (as she's now in the house) that she's got very watery green poop (no blood). I intend to pick up Sulmet after my husband gets home from work. What else can I do? She has been showing some interest in her crumbles (I am giving MP Game Bird 24% protein) but not really eating so much as picking at it. Any help appreciated. I'm usually pretty good at nursing birds, but with the poo this way, I don't want to take a chance and lose her in case I didn't think of something. I've only had these birds for 1 1/2 weeks.

Was she vaccinated for Mareks disease? At this age coccidiosis can still be a problem. With the balance issues and weakness, I would try to get her hydrated with electrolyte solution (SaveAChick is good) in case of dehydration. Symptoms of coccidiosis are weakness, lethargy, diarrhea or blood in stools, puffing up, and a poor appetite. If you suspect cocci, then Corid (amprollium) would be best to use in the water. Mareks disease can start showing up at this age, and may start with balance issues, weakness of one or both legs or wings. Green droppings can be a sign of not eating enough, but Mareks can sometimes cause this. Here are some links to read about Mareks:

She is worse this morning. She can no longer stand and wants to lay on her side. She now has a really high fever. I have her propped up on her tummy. She is still alert and responsive. Her poop is harder now and dark in color but foul smelling. I noticed she's been compulsively preening her feathers (no external parasites as it was the first thing I checked for bringing her in the house). She's on tetracycline (as that's what I had available). Never had one this sick before.

We took a trip to the vet yesterday. She's still hanging in there. Eating like a pig and now drinking on her own. She still won't stand up, but we're doing a steroid, Vita B, a stronger antibiotic and saline drip. She's better than yesterday, so I hope she doesn't have too much damage to her organs. The vet didn't think Marek's (thankfully although wish he'd tested for it to be sure). He wasn't sure exactly other than the pneumonia and possibly parasites.
