I bought a dozen chicks at Tractor Supply at Easter time. I have been having a problem with one of them pretty much ever since. First she showed signs of Coccida, so I did a round of treatment for everyone. The bloody stool cleared up. But she stayed puffed up and kept her eyes pretty much closed all the time. We noticed that her eyes were super tiny and sort of set deep into her head. Not looking at all like the other chickens. (all the same breed) We thought she may be blind. She always ate with her eyes closed. I thought that she may be sick. So i put her on antibotics for about a week. No change, stayed puffed up, and slept all the time and hardly ate. Now shes 3 months, she was treated a second time with Corid (about a week ago) and I used a general wormer for her about a week after the first Corid treatment. No change, still strange sunken tiny eyes. She does drink and eat some, not much, just enough to stay alive. I have force fed her a number of times. I thought she may have a yeast problem going on. I bought her a good yogurt last week. She likes it, and eats it but no improvement at all. Still puffed up, skinny, funny looking eyes. I have her on medicated baby chick food. I noticed about 2 days ago that her eyes seem really itchy. The skin around her eyes is more puffy then usual and I saw her rubbing them on her side. She tries to keep them shut tight. I put antibotic ointment in her eyes. (good people stuff) about 4 days ago for 3 days. No real improvement, in fact she seems worse. Now shes back on an antibotic again.(amoxicillin). I am clueless..

So in a nut shell I did this for her.....

Wormed her 2 different times with Corid for 5 days each time.
General wormer once
Antibotics (doing the second round now)
Eye ointment
Yogurt for a yeast thing...

Shes small, skinny, sweet, I just want to help her. I`m getting attached. Any ideas?

If eyes are a window to our soul, hers are painful and itchy. No discharge or junk just look puffy with tiny eyeballs and she must keep them shut. Oh her stool is pretty much just water and if there is any matter in it, its not much. Well she hardly eats.... sighhhhhh

Any ideas?

hello silkies, i was about to start a thread regarding this same issue. i have a 3 month old dutch bantam i got from a batch of 30 from ideal poultry. the last three days i noticed that she is just making a scandal and scratching her left eye and rubbing it on the side. she is just pipping and scratching the whole day. i went ahead and put some antibiotic ointment on her eye (which looks a little swollen compared to the other one) and things havent changed. it looks kind of painful to her cause i try to grab her and she runs but suddenly stops pipping and scratching her eye. hopefully someone here will answer our call.

My poor chick is in a miserable state. I kept her at the barn with her litter mates but with it being so hot out, and the fact I almost ran over her with my car... I kept her in the house a few days. To watch her closely. She seems a bit more active, but is keeping her sore eyes shut and only opens them if my dogs or cats scare her. Other wise with me they are shut tight. I hope someone on here can give us some ideas. Lets keep this bumped up in hopes that someone with knowledge will post some help. Good luck and let me know if you find out anything. I`m going to do some searches on Google and I`ll post anything that may help us.

Try her on some vitamins. Over medicating her might be one problem. What kind of bedding is she on,could be an allergic reaction.

What exact brand of vitamins should i get for her?

at the moment shes on white pine chips in my bathroom in a big horse tub. But before this she has been free range with hay in the coop at bedtime. Shes not growing at all and just sits fluffed up. Her bowls are watery, but maybe thats because she hardly eats.

edit to add. her eyes are so puffy they look painful but she can see. she comes running to me when shes out free, then shuts her eyes tight and sits on my feet. I feel so bad for her. I just want to fix her..
