3 month old chickens

Hi all! I have 3 month old Buff Orps and Barred Rocks. Obviously, they haven't started laying just yet. However, I have to go pick up feed today and my dh wants me to switch them to layer feed. Can I? Is it too soon? If I get layer feed do I need to get them scratch too? We're total newbs at this so thanks in advance for your sage advice!

What I've read here is that you should wait until your first egg is laid, then switch. That's what I'm going to do, anyway.
