3 month old Golden Wyandotte not acting right, looking for suggestions on what to do.

Hi everyone,

We have 8 chickens all about 3 months old and doing fine until today one of the Golden Wyandotte's is acting peculiar. She doesn't stay with the rest of the pack and just wants to sit. No other obvious problems, she looks fine but just doesn't want to get up and join in the fun. I know the information I have provided is rather vague but I will provide more data as it becomes available.

I went out and picked her up to check her crop and it appeared to be rather hard. So the book we have suggested giving her some olive oil and massaging it along with inverting her to try and get her to throw it up. No luck getting her to cough it up but we gave her a little more oil and massaged it a good bit longer. I will continue to check on her and post any updates.

Day 2 and she has eaten and drank water along with pooping so things seem ok but she is still a little out of it. Her crop first thing in the morning still had stuff in it but not as much as yesterday. So today I will provide more massaging, I have had no luck getting her to throw up so if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

We checked her crop and there is still a soft squishy feel to it, could this be the problem? I thought it would be harder than this.

I found a sick hen the other day and her crop was full of grain and rock hard, so I gave her 60ml of pedialytle and massaged her crop. By the morning it was half the size... gave another 60ml of Pedialyte and that fixed her.

Curiously, why do people give olive oil? I'm no expert, but I think mineral oil would be a better choice as it would definitely help stuff move through the intestines, olive oil won't, it will just get digested.

When mine get sick, this is what I do:

• *Thorough* physical exam which includes inserting a gloved, lubed finger into the cloaca to check for an egg, check for cuts, bruising lumps, smells, etc.
• Dust for mites/lice with poultry dust even if I cannot see any. DE does not work.
• Weigh on digital kitchen scale record weight and weigh daily. any weight loss is bad.
• Place bird in a warm, quiet place on towel with food and water that it can't drown in.
• De-worm with Safeguard or Panacur, liquid or paste (fenbendazole 10%) 50mg/kg by mouth and repeat in 10 days. Warning - Safeguard/Panacur should not be used during a molt.
• Once warm, if not drinking and crop is empty, hydrate with warmed Pedialyte or lactated ringers with a feeding tube - 30ml/kg every 6-8 hours.
• If not eating after 24 hours and crop is empty, tube feed baby bird food mixed with Pedialyte
• Inspect poop.
• If I suspect a stuck egg, treat for egg binding.
• If I suspect a bacterial infection, treat with antibiotics.
• If I suspect a fungal infection, treat with Nystatin.
• If I suspect coccidiosis, treat with Corid (amprolium).
• If I suspect canker or histomoniaisis (blackhead), treat with Metronidazole.
