My 3 month old EE/Orpington mix has what looks like a small piece of his insides popping out of his vent. We applied Preparation H and have pushed it in a couple times. Is there anything else we can do? Has anyone had this happen to a boy? I was only able to find hens with prolapsed vents. What are the causes for a male chick? Thanks!

You may be seeing the rooster's papilla, which is a rudimentary copulating organ for transmitting sperm to the hen. The male chicken (rooster) does not have a penis like other animals and therefore there is no penetration of the female reproductive tract when mating. Instead the female inverts her cloaca (the common junction of the reproductive and digestive systems) which comes in contact with the male's inverted cloaca and receives the sperm. The cloaca is then drawn back into the hen's body and the sperm are captured. They then begin the journey up the length of the reproductive system. My best guess is that what you are seeing is your rooster's inverted cloaca exposing the papilla. It's normal. Leave it alone.
