I have a 6 chicks I just got on Friday. One of the chicks has started acting tired and down in the dumps. Hangs it's head a lot. But when I reach for it, it perks up and tries to get away. I picked it up and noticed its nose was clogged up. (It also had been making some funny sounds) I've never seen this or had to deal with this.
No idea if it's common or if it was something I did or the chick was sick when I got it on Friday.
I got it from a girl locally not a store. It being Easter I haven't texted her about it.
Should I separate the chick from the rest or will it b okay? Is it going to die? I'm really concerned I've never seen this before since I'm relatively new to chickens

UPDATE: I gave the chicks some electrolytes in their water and they have perked up but they are still sick. The 2 have runny noses and they get clogged up with snot (as nasty as that sounds) and I'm not sure if they are sneezing or just trying to clear their beaks out. I have no idea what to do I really need some help

How old is the chick?
Do you have a video or photos?
Any other symptoms like coughing, discharge from the eyes, rales, etc.?

You may want to contact whoever you purchased them from the see if they have a history of respiratory illness on their flock(s).

Try to clear the mucous the best you can. Keep her warm and see that she is drinking well.

Sneezing with mucous can be an indication of respiratory illness, the other chicks are more than likely already exposed, so separating her would be only a convenience for you if you are treating her or if she is getting picked on. Without knowing the cause, it's hard to advise on on what method of treatment.

Dusty bedding and feed, molds and poor ventilation can cause sneezing as well. You can try using something like VetRx to see if there is improvement. Antibiotics may be needed if she doesn't improve, but won't cure respiratory illness, they only treat any secondary infections cause by illness.

I did contact the girl I got them from. I paid $10 each for them. They were acting fine when I got them but they were in a cramped space with WAY too many other chicks. She said none of her others r sick. And only offered to take them back and see how they would do under her care...
I have them in clean bedding that was low dust (I got it from atwoods it's for chickens) and I only noticed it on Sunday. The one started acting pretty lethargic. Dropping its head and having its eyes closed and its head would just fall (it was still standing though) then I put the electrolytes in the water and it perked up. The other one that was with it had a littl bit of a snotty nose as well so I didn't separate it.
They just have runny noses. Kinda making the funny sneezing sound... No discharge from the eyes or anything like that. And it's not a runny nose it doesn't run down their beaks or anything. I'll take some pics.

The blue one was the worst. Sometimes it will have bedding stuck on its beak and its snot dries and I have to get it off. Or it'll have a big bit of snot in its beak that's dried and hanging out and I get it off with a q tip. It was the one that would just stand there and drop its head mostly having its eyes closed. Since the electrolytes they both have ate and drank. And they r more active. But still have the nasty booger beaks.... The black one doesn't have it near as bad. But it has it. They were both together in the cramped over crowded pen at that girls house. The other 4 were inside the girls house and they seem fine. She told me the polish r 3 weeks old.

I have also only had the chicks since Friday. The bedding they were in when I got them looked to b mostly poop. And like I said it was EXTREMELY crowded. But they were all running around and acting fine.
I noticed on Sunday how sick the little blue one was and separated the other babies expect the black one which looked slightly sick as well. And thus far the other 4 aren't sick. Just the 2 polish babies. She kept the other 4 (which are separated now) in the house and the polish were outside in the over crowded area.

Do the best you can to keep the nostrils cleared. It's possible it could have been the environment they were kept in. Personally I would try VetRx first, then if they don't improve or worsen (coughing, runny eyes, etc.) then I would take the next step to see if antibiotics may prove helpful.

Keep us posted.

I looked up when the babies can go outside and since yesterday was so nice here I took all the babies outside (still kept them seperated) but let them get some sunshine (and shade of course) and I think the fresh air and sunshine did wonders. And the electrolytes. I think ur right it prob was just were they were being kept because the other four that were seperated at her house never were sick.
Thanks so much for telling me what could have caused it. I really think now it was their living conditions. Makes sense because they were the only 2 that were sick :( But like I said today they seem pretty darn good :) and I'm just thrilled since on Sunday it looked like one was about to die! And now the runny noses seemed to have cleared up from when I checked the past 2 times today. So if there's nothing tomorrow I'm gonna say they must be all better ! :) When do u think I can put them all back together?

I'm glad they are doing better

Being in poor conditions/ventilation could very well have been the cause since they are improving since you got them. Give them a few more days to see if they clear up completely before introducing the others.

Okay great thank u so much. I really do appreciate all ur knowledge!
