We just had a duckling die for no apparent reason. It was peeping and when I went to check on it, it looked like it was choking. I picked it up and it started gagging and then spitting up bloody mucus and just died. I did some searches online but all I can find is something called Necrotic Enteritis however everything I can find on NE says its a bacterial disease found in breeder ducks. These were 3 week old ducklings that we hatched in our incubator, they haven't ever been around other ducks, their food and water has been the same since day 3 and they were hatched in a brand new, never used incubator. The only thing I can think of is that someone sent us icky eggs that we had in the incubator for about 12-18 hours early on in the incubation but as soon as we figured out that they were old, rotten eggs we pulled them. Is it possible they were in with our duck eggs for long enough to cause a bacterial disease to infest the incubator?
Luckily we keep our ducks in brooders based on where they come from and don't mix them for at least 6 weeks so the other ducks should be fine if it is in fact NE (since what I am reading says it is passed when the ducks eat an infected ducks poop).
Any info, advice or whatever would be appreciated since I would like to know if there is something I can do for the remaining 3 ducks who shared the brooder and it's hard to figure out what to do when I don't know exactly what went wrong.
