I took mine outside starting at 1 1/2 weeks as well. My husband set up a screened-in-pavillion-tent-thingy we use when camping. I have 23 chicks - and catching them in the brooder to put in a box for transport was the hardest part! I agree their personalities really shine when outside - and the chest bumping started in earnest about the time I took them out!
Even at 1 1/2 weeks they would attempt to fly out of the brooder when I lifted the screened lid. I moved them to the coop when they were 2 weeks old. They LOVE it and fly all over now and can even get on the roosts - the lowest of which is about 2 1/2 off the ground.
My biggest concern on outings is chicken hawks - and I've read a few posts on here from people that lost chicks to chicken hawks when they were only a few feet from them.
