3 Yr Old Hen Walking on Hocks, Thin

Update: My Penny Henny is still with us and has improved a bit. She has finally started to eat grains again after days and days of nothing but watermelon, berries, tomatoes, raisins.... She wasn’t drinking and the watermelon and tomato got at least some fluids into her... She can eat more easily now (before, it seemed like she wanted to eat, but couldn’t quite manage). She walks on long legs again, comes to me for treats... She might have even felt a tad heavier today... Very encouraged that she is finally eating regular feed again. So, she is better now, but not well. I know she needs chicken company but I am wary of putting her back already, as that would be stressful for her, too, and I would like her to be a bit stronger and heavier first. So we’ll keep playing it by ear. Her eyes still look the same, btw.

Wow that’s awesome news! Hope she makes a full recovery!!!

Glad to hear that your hen is doing better. You could try having some short supervised visits with her flock in the later part of the day before going to roost. Or try her in a dog cage with food and water near where the chickens spend time.
Yes, those are great ideas! The trouble is that we don’t live near the chickens right now - they are 25 minutes away. I go out in the morning to take care of them, then someone else locks up at night. I thought about the dog crate (she is in one here) - but it would be an extra hour a day of work for me. I will do it, but not quite yet, so I don’t have to go out for weeks...

Update: I kept this hen with us for another week. She seemed the same, better, but not great. Her comb got a bit pale. Then we had to go and drop our son off at college, so I decided to just put her back with the others to make it easier on the lady taking care of the chickens while we were gone. There was a tiny bit of chasing, nothing major, she fit right back in. While we were gone we got reports that Penny seemed ok, but didn’t manage to get on the roost at night. Well, a week passed and when I came back she looked completely fine. Red comb, active, a bit fuller, integrated. So - we‘ll see! Looks like she is going to be around a bit longer. Tough little girl!
