Has anyone tried modifying the top of the fountain so it can be filled without taking it off the heated base? I really like the waterer, but if it could be filled from the top it would be excellent. I thought about just cutting the top and putting some sort of makeshift hinge on it or would that ruin it causing the water free flow?

They are designed to have a pressure built up inside to just let water out as it is used. If you cut a hole in the top all the water will flow out and empty.
