I love reading about the habits of everyone's chickens. Their behavior is really cool.

Mine rise at around 5 a.m. and make quite a lot of noise, and they, too, will stumble around outside in the dark the few times I've let them out that early. I have silkies, a RIR, a black Australorp, black cochin, birchin cochin and wyanotte bantams who all do this.

Two of my buff orpingtons and both of my blue splash wyandotte bantams go to bed at 4:30 in the afternoon! They're either lazy or making sure they get the best roosting spot.

I have 1 speckled sussex that just refuses to put herself to bed in the coop. She prefers the bar above the porch swing. I call her "Football" because that brown coloring is similar to a football, and cuz that's how I carry her carcass back to the coop every single night! She's a loner! The seramas and their mixed breed bantam friends got to bed early, the rest of the standards next, except for one PR that likes to wander around a bit first. I love chickens!

Oh my ... that's one of the reasons why I call my speckled sussex a space cadet, she's a loner too. I always thought it was because she spent the first 2 weeks of her life in her own little brooder (she had a broken leg) and didn't become socially adept. She could care less what the other 40ish chickens are doing in a pack and would be in her own little spot, digging, not a care in the world.

If you can't tell, she's my favorite chicken, hands down.

One night in the summer I couldn't find her. I had let them out to free range while I did chores. I had seen her about 5 minutes before I went to lock the coop up, digging in the yard. But I go in and count, and I'm missing a chicken. I always look for her first and of course she wasn't there. So I go outside, and call her... nothing. I go back inside, look again, this time good, in the nesting boxes, etc... no Hoppy. I go back outside and call her, nothing. I walk around the coop and look under it. Nothing. I look in the compost bin (she's sometimes in there digging away, oblivious to the world)... nothing. I walk around the house, nothing. At this point I'm starting to become seriously worried that she got eaten by a fox quickly, and am almost in panic mode. I go back into the garage (I leave the doors open in summer) to get a better flashlight and there she is at the top of the garage stairs, at the house door - looking at me like, I sleep in here, ok?

Oh and she begs for treats... *they're molting here... they look terrible*

Awww Hoppy is beautiful!

I've got one named Hoppy, but it's because she hatched with one leg sticking out to the side and I could never fix it and didn't have the heart to cull her. She hops around on one leg so I named her Hoppy.

My ~3 y.o. red sexlink no longer sleeps in the coop, but hops up too a high perch on an outdoor cabinet. Since there is too much junk around that cabinet, we can't reach her, to place her in the coop, so that is where she sleeps. Why fight her?? She also hides her eggs. If I find her nest and take all the eggs, she will promptly find another hiding place, which will take me at least a month to figure out where it is. Sigh. When I dispatched her boyfriend (he was a terror with my boys) she held a grudge against me for a month. During that month, she pecked me at least once and gave me a verbal dress down several times - one time she even gave me the stink eye, and squawked through the kitchen window.

Hee hee, I'll try to include at least one of her eggs in my swap.

assuming she doesn't find a new hididng spot. sigh

I have a barred rock (Tia) that is been downright mean to all the others. I made the coop larger so I could have more hens; Tia goes and claims a whole perch to herself and won't share. Seven hens and one rooster end up on 4 feet of perch while Tia sits like a queen on her five foot perch.
