Hi everyone i am from Wales and am keeping chickens for the 3 time. After having a break the first time after fox had all 25 in one night, and 2nd time hatched aggs were all cockerels. Hoping my pol's will be safe from fox attentions as I have doubled security with pen in a pen. they can come into the grass pen when i am about during the day, but in in the evening the innner pen and when its bedtimes into the locked pen where there is the coop. I have 4 bluebelles. they are beauties, laying every day, and very charming talking all the time when i come in to feed them. They are stay at home kinda girlies, if let loose they don't wander far and are quick to make for shelter if the red wing kites and buzzards are overhead. Having a problem with feather pecking so off into the forum to see what info I can find. Never had this trouble before.

! Great to have you with us! Quite a few Welsh folks on BYC! Might even be a Welsh thread in the link below if you dig deep enough. Glad you persevered in your chicken keeping efforts! Sounds like you have a safe and happy flock now. The feather picking might be boredom if the feather picking is taking place in the coop. Do they free range much? Good luck to you and enjoy your flock!

Are they just feather plucking or eating the feathers. Sometimes they eat feathers because they aren't getting enough protein.
I have them on layers pellets, treat of mixed corn, and cabbage which they love. they are ranging in a small grassy pen. I dare not let them loose as i did my first flock because of foxy, he is about every night, actually there is a pair they call to each other all night long. I couldnt stand the heartbreak of hearing silence in the morning when I get up. I made sure I had a type of chicken that is not a great ranger, as I don't want them to be chafing at the bit to get out into the garden and paddock behind it. They all seem happy and it is just one girlie doing the feather plucking, and lets put it like this there are no feathers on the ground or in a nest so she is eating them. One has a naked bum now poor girl, her fluffy knickers have gone

. Maybe I should take her out and put her on her own in my little broody shed. I have read up on a thread in here it can be boredom or a lack of protein. any more suggestions.

Thankyou for you advice I am trying to get to the bottom of it. I am very happy to have my girls again.
