Batch of 16 New Hampshire chicks arrived yesterday, all of them looked good with the exception of one who looked a little slow. They're being brooded in the coop with a MHP (same as my last three batches of chicks have of which I had 100% survival rate). Bedtime last night they all looked great. Looked good this morning as well. Went out just now (about 4 hours after last check) and three were dead, and one was sitting under MHP and not opening her eyes. After some research on here, best I can guess is she had stargazing disease/wry neck. Made up some Sav-A-Chick and put it in their waterer, but in the few mins it took us to find it and do that, she must have found the waterer, as she was foaming at the mouth like they do when they drink too much too quickly and seem to drown themselves. Brought her inside and my daughter was holding her, wiping the bubbles away, but her neck kept falling into the stargazing position. She died within a few minutes.
Is there anything else, other than Sav A Chick, that I need to do for the rest of the batch to ensure I don't have any more losses? The one who died is the one who wasn't moving as much as the others yesterday, but everyone else has been and still does look bright eyed and bushy tailed, so we were surprised to find those three dead.
