I have 4 hens all going broody within 1-2 days of each other. One is my older Buff Orpington who has hatched and raised clutches before, she is a fantastic momma. At 6 weeks she is DONE, she will have the babies in the yard, she will head to the big coop and leave the littles in her dust!! This year I have the BO, and 3 Favoroles ( this is the first time they have been broody. I have a small coop away from the big coop that I use. The BO made her very comfortable, moving her and her eggs at night.
i tried to make nest For th SF’s and the did not want anything to do with the little coop.
I move the back to the big coop and that settled into boxes 1-2 & 3. My issues is that the nest boxes are about 24 inches off the groun,, if thy are successful at the hatch how will the babies handle that. I was thinking that ones the hatch, I may be able to take babies and pot them under the BO at night.Or can I take the nest down and place them On the floor of the coop? I really was going to let the hens raise the babies with the coop (family). And hopefully the hens will protect. I also thought that I coud put the SF hatches under the BO at night and maybe she would accept. This is a first time experiment. They are barnyard mixes as the rooster is a boardwalk cross with something. He is such a good rooster and protects his hands that I feel like he would also watch after the babies. I just don’t know what kind of mamas the SF‘s will be. Any advice would be helpful.8

You could break all but one of the broodies.
Leaving them in that other coop might changes their minds about setting.

Are you in AU?
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Hi there , thanks for replying. We are located about 1.5 hours east of Houston. I was going to let the SF perhaps hatch the eggs then try to slide babies under my BO at night , since she is proven mom. I just feel like the babies might be safer in the hatch- grow out pen?.thanks for the info I did update some of my profile
