I hope someone can advise me. I think I'm going to lose her.

My brown leghorn has been listless and I noticed she was looking a bit odd. She has a hard lump in her crop about the size of a marble. It doesn't feel like food and I'm afraid she ate some shavings and they are stuck. Is there anything I can do or am I destined to lose her?

How is the chick doing? Is the lump still hard? I have hear of massaging the croup, but not sure if that's what you should do if they eat shavings. Something I have heard that can help is putting a layer of paper towels down over the shavings for the first week or so, helps them to figure out that shavings aren't food. Silly chicks will eat anything!

I had this happen to me last spring. I don't know why they reccomend shavings for the new chicks. They eat them and it leads to this. I used hay this year for the new chicks this year and no crop problems.

When this happend to me I feed the chick water that had olive oil in it and then I fed her olive oil soaked bread. This worked for me. Hope this helps. Good Luck
