4 Day old Quail Died

So Sad. Woke up this morning to find Baby Q dead. This was our fist baby to hatch. It was fine for 4 1/2 days. It would run around like crazy then just suddenly fall asleep then wake up chirping then do it all over again. I am assuming we did everything right since it made it this far. Unfortunately my woodstove shut off in the night and the temp got to 83 degrees in the brooder. Am I right in guessing this was the problem? He was alone so no friends to snuggle. We saw it drink, it picked at the chick starter. But is it normal for them just fall alseep and sort of tip over then wake up? He/she fell alseep in the funniest positions. Would love to know we were doing things right since another chick just hatched in the brooder and I am afraid now. Oh, no pasty butt either, checked that. Help.

Oh, forgot to mention the brooder was previously at 95-99 degrees until the stupid stove shut off.

I would think the brooder temperature was a possible cause. Chick starter is not for Quail. If you are going to hatch them get some Game Bird Starter. It's much higher in protein, something Game Birds need

Redhead might be using the starter sold at TSC that says for starting chicks, quail, turkey, etc. on the bag (Dumor, I believe) I use that because where I live there isn't anything else available. I grind up kitten chow in the food processor and mix it in to help boost the protein. not optimal, I know, but the best I can do. Baby quail do just fall over and go to sleep. They also spread their leggs and wings out when they are sleeping sometimes, too. They look dead, but then get right up and run around some more. Wh ywas he all alone? Did the others die? Not hatch? If so, that could be an issue, too.

Quail are rather fragile because they are so small, and chill easily. I bet it was because it was cold.

Thanks all, I think the temperature was the issue as well.I only had the one quail egg. So he also didn't have anyone to snuggle either. Also, it was the chick starter from TSC. Not a lot of options here The guilt is awful!
