I am really wondering what is the cause of a 4 day old Silky Bantam death. The symptoms are identical to Coccidiosis, however the chick has only been alive for 4 days. Doesn't coccidiosis have an incubation period that is longer than 4 days? And whats more, another chick is showing signs of the same - lethargic, loss of appetite, liquid discharge from beak, runny stool, weak, inability to thrive, etc.

My poor frizzle cochin hen (appropriately named Kitchen Chicken and resides in our ranch kitchen/shop) sat on eggs for 9 weeks before her and I came to an agreement and I went out and purchased peeping eggs from a silky breeder. She was so happy to become a mom. Now, we have sick chicks on our wings/hands and after I separated the sick chick from momma chicken, every time the chick would peep, momma hen would make the sweetest cluck, trying to reassure the baby chick even though she could no longer see it, she could hear it. Sadly, despite our best efforts the chick has died and I just noticed another chick is falling behind. Should I contact the breeder? I have Tylan 50 on hand. Should I administer to all? Momma too? What could be the cause?

I am hoping others with more knowledge than I, can give me some advise. Thank you

The symptoms of coccidiosis varies with the specie of the coccidia. The early symptoms are not really determined as the egg has a very short incubation period of 2-3 days.
That said, I'd get your chicks and mama chicken started on corid and disinfect everything with a water/ammonia solution.

Do you have the chickies on medicated feed? If not, you might want to start them on it. For the already-sick chick you would need to give them Corid (amprolium). Differential diagnosis would be necrotic enteritis; very serious infection of the intestines. Hopefully it's not that!

Wow, so coccidia have different incubation periods and it could be just 3 days from time of exposure? Thank you so much for the information, it probably has saved the lives of our other 4 chicks. I know what I must do now.
