4 day old with scissored beak

You rub it along the jaw, where the beak connects to the head. The idea is to get the ligaments and muscles to relax so that the beak will re-align. I believe you apply it every day.

If you decide to keep her, don't put her in a pen with a wire floor. That's what happened to mine. It's beak got stuck in the hardware cloth while eating and it broke it's neck trying to get loose.

ChicknGurl, Okay, I have written it down and will go tomorrow to find some. I don't want to cull her unless I have to. I was just really worried seeing how much worse it is in two days.

Here she is. It was just very slightly off two days ago.

I'll take regular pics on her as time goes on. She's a curious little thing. I was trying to take pictures of the others and you would see her head pop up in several.

Editted because I posted wrong pic.

she is so pretty but you do what your gut tells you to do. Don't worry about what people will say as you are the one who has to deal with her. many raise them if they are eating and drinking and the other chickens do not pick on it but others cull the chick immediately to save the hassle. It may or may not be harder on it to let it live. It is totally your decision.

Thanks Ozark Hen, it really is hard to decide to end the life of an animal that is otherwise healthy. I think I'm going to try the penetran. In a week I'll see how she is and then decide whether to cull or not.

Good decision, you are the only one who make this decision and I always believe I should follow my instincts. She is such a cutie isn't she?

Yes, she is a cutie. Her name is Lucy. She was the first one I named after swearing I wouldn't name any!

been there, done that. My Lucy is a dominique and she runs to me and pecks me if I don't notice her. She is not the scissored beak though. I was so torn over my scissored beak but a lady is taking her and has experience with them so I feel I did the right thing letting her live. She is very tame also. Heart breaking isn't it?

Well, Lucy's beak continued to get worse. I was hand feeding her and even then she was having trouble. She was dull and just not thriving. I did take her and the other chicks outside for a while the other day. They had a great time.

Today, I put her to sleep using dry ice. I read about it on here. It was quick and humane. She really did just go to sleep.

I am so sorry you had to make that hard decision. It was so considerate to have gone the dry ice route.

Sounds like she would not have gotten better, so I think you made a good choice (for you).

I hope the others are healthy and having fun

I am so sorry Danette

You did the right thing. I am not aware of the dry ice method so I need to read up on it ...just in case something happens in the future I will know what to do.
