My 4-H is building a chicken coop, and we were wondering how big we needed to make each individual coop? The biggest chicken kept in them will be a standard cochin, and we want all the boxes to be the same size:) thanks so much!

Are you building one coop or more than one? How many chickens will live in one coop? The recommended size for their hen house is about 4 square feet per standard sized hen. In the run,--10 square feet per hen is recommended. If they get out to range everyday you can have a little less space for the run but if they don't get out then 10 sq, feet should be a minimum and more is better. For large hens the nest box should be 14 to 16 inches square.

Have fun!

Thanks! It's going to be 1 big coop unit, with smaller individual boxes in each one. the owners of the chickens will be responsible for figuring out run accomodations.
