Hi all, I'm helping my daughter get ready for Fur and Feathers with 4-H. First, I'm going to attach a picture of her Serama. We need help figuring out her color. We'd love any advice you can give for showmanship.

She's typing her poultry record book but it's been hard to get the font to be the same throughout. Have you found this to be a problem?

She's finishing up her art entries and we're excited! We'd love any advice.
Thanks!

Hi! Unfortunately I know nothing about Seramas, but I would copy this post and repost it in a different area, like general breed discussion forum

I am in 4-H and I have showed chickens for 5 years and I have got grand champion poultry at the county fair for 3 years and I got champion poultry at state fair this year. I usually do pretty well in showmanship although I haven't won anything

So if you have the option to choose your showmanship bird then choose one that isn't perfect like my showmanship bird is 6 year old Barred Rock hen and her coloring is smoky and muddled and there are some other stuff wrong with her

Here is what I usually say when I am doing showmanship.

My name is ___ and I am from ___ county. I am in the _____ 4-H club. My 4-H age is __this is my 5th year showing chickens. My bird is a Barred Plymouth Rock hen. Barred Rocks were first seen in Massachusetts in the 1800s. Barred Rock hen weigh from 7-8 lbs and roosters weigh from 9-10 lbs. Barred Rock hens lay 200-280 brown eggs per year. My hen is 6 years old and she is in the American class.
(I start at the break) Her beak is yellow with a black spot though her beak shouldn't have any black on it. She has a single comb(count comb points) she has 6 comb points but she should have only 5 comb points. Her eyes are clear. (Point out her earlobes) (Show her hackle feathers) ( flip her so one side is facing the judge and extend her wing closest to the judge) here are her primary feathers and here are her secondary feathers(point to feathers as you talk) ( fold her wing back up nicely and then flip around so her other wing is facing the judge and repeat the same thing with this wing) ( rub her feathers the wrong way and check for lice and mite damage) she is free of lice and mites.
Her pattern is smoky and muddled. Her pattern is supposed to be clear barring and should not be smoky and muddled the way her pattern is.( Put your fingers across her back so your fingers are under her wings so the judge can see the width of her back) Here is her saddle.( Lift her feathers and show her vent) Here is her vent it is clean.
(Flip her on her back) Here is her keel bone and here is her breast. (Flip her back up) She has 4 toes and all her toenails are there. Here is her shank and hock. Her legs should be a brighter yellow but her coloring as faded as she got older.
I water her every other day and I feed her layer crumble. My favorite part of the poultry project is raising chickens

One very important thing for showmanship is what the goat showmanship judge at state fair said. He said that if he asks you a question and you aren't sure of the answer just tell him something and sound confident about it.
Like if the judge asks a question about your bird and you aren't sure of the answer make up an answer but sound very confident about it.
Like when I was asked to point out a part on one of my animals and I don't know where it is I just point to a random part on them without hesitation and pretend I know parts of my animals

I bet your flock loves you so much, it sounds like you care so much for them! Thank you for typing out what you say to the judge, it's so helpful!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

You could post a picture of her in our Exhibition, Genetics, & Breeding to the SOP and someone should be able to help you there.

As for showing birds, several of our members have written articles about it. Here are three:
