The only word of caution I would give in regard to that particular showmanship video is that CA does showmanship drastically different than most states, Most showmanship is done individually around the country and walking the birds is not a requirement in a vast majority of the states. We recently traveled to a show in CA from WI and it was completely different type of showmanship than we were used to. Either way knowledge and handling are still important and APA- ABA youth site is a tremendous resource.

Good point spangledcornish! However we cover everything that a judge could ask of a showman. Most may not do walking, or examination, but it still important to know how to do those things =)

Thanks guys! I'll look at the APA and ABA youth websites and with some luck there's actually a 4-H poultry clinc next weekend so I'll be able to learn quite a bit.

You NEED to know your diseases, and parisites internal and external. Also one of the hardest things for we is posing my bird, start posing your chicks when they are young, so that they get used to it.

KNOW YOUR BREEDS STANDARD! That's one of the most important things. It will separate you from the people who just know the basic standard form of showmanship. Make sure you learn "standard" the procedure. Being a senior they may ask you about other species like turkeys and ducks. That happened to me at the last show and I was like a deer caught in head lights. Had not a clue what I was doing when I got to that part. Thankfully it was a small show with only four people in my group so I took first. Also know your judges. I got yelled at for flipping my bird at the last show even though every other judge didn't mind it. Apparently with the larger breeds this can cause heart attacks and you have to drop them some how to get their hearts going again or something like that. I still won though because I knew my standard more than anyone in my class. My bird also fought me the whole time but I just remained calm and didn't loss control. Good luck!

Thank you! I've been studying the standard like crazy. I was told that we need to know standard breeds as well as bantams. I will start to look at turkeys and ducks as well. I've just started studying diseases also. Getting a little nervous as fair is around the corner.
