4-H Showmanship tips please?

Just remember they are judging you not the chicken. My kids used the chicken that is most tamest. So we have kids that bring chickens just to use in showmanship. A lot of them use bantams cause they are easy to handle.

Not entirely true. Following the APA guidelines for Showmanship 20 points out of 100 are dedicated to the appearance & condition of the bird. Some of the fairs I judge have their own evaluation instrument bt all of them do consider the bird's appearance as part of the total score.

At my county fair the birds were judged seperately but points were still attributed to the bird's cleanliness during showmanship. Had a great time and placed third in showmanship and in the skillathon. We did egg grading, parasites, meat cuts, and a few other things.

Remember to watch the judge at all times and you could use vasaline to shine their beaks and feet just before showing. A good bath the day before showing is also a people pleaser. Just keep your girls looking like superstars and that will get you some leeway. And know your birds to the best of your ability.

I would look at the Merck veterinary manual too, that will help you get really technical and makes you look like you know everything.
:D
