I hope this thread is not totally dead! My two kids are in 4-H for the first time this year. The 15 year old is doing Pullets and Geology and the 5 year old is doing Pullets and Art.
I am hoping that you all re-awaken the thread so that they can get some great advise from kids who have been in 4-H before, especially ones who have done poultry.
With Pullets, they get to pick 5-10 hens and will keep track of eggs, health, etc. I do not know about the showing part, but I am hoping they get to pick one to show. We decided to have them do 5 chickens each. We have a mixed flock so they got to pick quite a variety!
My son, who is 15, picked: 1) Speckled Sussex (Dot), 2) Spangled Russian Orloff (Kuritsa), 3) White Cochin (Snow), 4) Indian Red Jungle Fowl (Lightning "Streak"), 5) Black Australorp (Beauty).
My daughter, who is 5, picked: 1) Speckled Sussex (Spot), 2) Silver Laced Wyandotte (Lacy), 3) Buff Chantecler (Canada), 4) Blue Cochin (Daisy), 5) Gray Silkie (Puff).
Their hens are between almost 16 and 20 weeks and the older ones should start laying soon.
So far we have had 2 monthly meetings (October and November). The kids will do 1 'in club' demonstration each and can pick whichever project they want to do it on, and then optionally can do a state demonstration as well (if I am understanding it correctly), plus Fair, which is in July.
The last two meetings were about the organization, rules and conduct, old & new business, fund-raising, community service, etc. We will be getting our books and folders next meeting and we can't wait to get started. Right now we don't know what to do because we don't have the books yet![]()
If this thread revives, I will have my son start chatting with you guys and learning what he can!
you can enter your bird in an open category but you dont get to do showmanshipNow do you have to be in 4H to show a bird at a fair, or does it depend on the fair rules?
