4 month olds hate the top of the feeder

Is that normal? We have the standard metal long tray with beak holes in the top. I've found they don't eat much when the top is on but go to town when it is off. Is that what I'm supposed to do or what? I think they can't see well through the holes anymore. Maybe the top's for chicks or something? My brother and I disagree about it. Any thoughts?

Also, sometimes those edges are sharp; now and then someone starts finding beak injuries which trace back to those.
 
You should probably get a hanging type feeder or one of the ones that are a bucket with a tray on the bottom. Also raise it up to the height of the backs of the chickens for less waste. Terri O
 
I'm not worried about waste. They clean it out fast, even it they flip it. It's insane how fast they eat with no holes to stop them.
