Good morning! We got 4 week chicks from McMurrays 2 days ago. We've had chickens for a few years but this is our first experience with chicks. She is a Cuckoo Marans. She is in a dog crate with 4 others in our basement, with shavings on the tray. They're quite active and getting around well.
This morning when I brought food I noticed that she was sitting while the others were eating and then not bearing weight on her right leg. When I picked her up to look at her she did walk on it to run back away from me (they're quite skittish around us and not used to being handled).
One whole hock is red and swollen. Her feet look ok. I thought initially it could be a slipped tendon but I tried to roll the joint between my fingers and didn't feel anything, just a diffusely swollen joint. They've been getting Nutrena grower feed and water with chicken vitamins in it since they arrived. This is the best photo I could get - could it be a fracture? Our only vet option would be Tufts which we try to avoid. I'm wondering if I should separate her but worried to do that as she's so young. Thanks so much!
