Hi all, I need help! This little girl is 4 weeks old. She has blinked this eye much more than the other for a while now, but the last couple days it looks like her eyeball is swollen and has fluid in it. Now she is closing it most of the time. She eats good and drinks. She poops fine. She seems to sleep a bit more then the others. She has only had starter/grower, scrambled eggs, water and electrolytes. Any Ideas?

Nothing on it. It's just swollen looking. Looks like the eyeball has fluid in it.
She has an eye infection.

It could be Marek's. There is a strain that attracts the eyes.

It could also be Coryza. A bacterial infection of the eye.

It is possible that it is Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (Bubble Eye), but not likely.

Do you have penicillin, amoxycillin or Oxytetracycline?

No, they are all vaccinated for Mareks and have not been outside yet. Raising them in the house for 6 weeks. I will look into where to get antibiotics. I have heard of people using coconut oil for eye infections? Any thoughts?

The Marek's vaccine isn't exactly the protection that the hype makes it out to be. And the virus is transmitted in dust you could bring in on your clothes and it lives for years.

Unfortunately, it is possible. My entire flock was vaccinated. It is Marek's positive and I have lost 20 birds to it. ALL of them vaccinated.

If the infection were on the outside of the eye, coconut oil would be useful. However if there is cloudy fluid inside the eyeball, an antibiotic that targets bacterium is necessary.

Do you know of any I may be able to get at a feed store or tractor supply? I have never had a sick one. 😞 I cant be sure there is fluid in there, but im sure it would hurt to give her something and see if it helps. Also, should she be separated from her flock?

Rinse the eye with saline, open the eye to see if there's pus, dirt/debris that needs to be removed. Apply an eye ointment like Terramycin in the eye. If you can't get Terramycin, then use Original Neosporin. Do this at least once daily for a week, see if the eye clears up.

I'm sure the BYC community will chip in the best they can.

You might still be able to get Penicillin or Amoxicillin from an independent feed store. TSC does still carry Oxytetracycline. But call and check first. Different stores interpret the new laws differently. At the Mom & Pop Feed Stores, if it's not on the shelf, they may have it behind the counter.

Yes she should be separated. In a dimly lit area is best.

Honestly, ....and this is just me. I had the best results with eye infection by putting 1 single drop of injectable penicillin in the eye once a day for 3 days.
