4 x 4 goat and sheep fence....do chickens fit through?

I have Marans and they don't fit through. Years ago when I had RIR, Orps, Australorps, and RSL they never went through either. It's not from lack of trying on the RSL's part either. They tried to force themselves through everything.

My chickens can walk through that type of fencing but the weird thing is that they can never seem to find their way back through again

. I fixed this by adding 2' tall chicken wire all along the bottom of the fencing. It is quickly attached using zip ties.

I have heavy breeds (Wyandottes & Orpingtons) & until they are older (nearly a year old) they still fit thru that size fence.
What I did for them to "free-range" is a bunch of step-in fence posts & some 4' tall chix wire. Makes a nice big loop outside the "safe" yard for them to play in . But it WILL NOT hold up to an attack, so I put them away at night.
Once mine are older, they have the run of the place - 5 acres! As long as my Irish Setter isnt out, that is!

Okay, my GOATS go through my 4x4 goat fence!! At least the babies do when they are under 3 weeks old. Oh, yeah, they are nigerians and weigh in about 2 lbs!! Sorry, couldn't help myself here. My chickens go through my iron fence that is 4 inches apart But the long side is 5 ft. I would use chicken wire or smaller diameter to make it more chicken proof.

There is over 500 feet of fencing so I am just going to not let the little ones out and hope for the best. I often let my evil RIR roo and sweet pullet out as they spent enough time in the "dog pen" I used to have connected to the deck, that they don't stray far from the deck. I can't imagine putting up over 300 feet of chicken wire along the bottom of the fence....

The only real temptation is the back half acre that is all brush and weeds (about 5 feet high)....I bet they would love to forage back there. Time to get a flock of Jersey Giants, just so I can have something to go loose in the big yard

Thanks everybody for posting, I had wanted to get 2X4x4'woven for a parameter fence but have have an opportunity to pick up 4X4. I'll plan on a bottom liner of chicken wire and if they fly over... ho well. My birds seldom leave about a 100' Radius of the coop but I'm hopeful they will venture out into the 3.5 acres of brush and 'stuff'. I'm guessing they feel secure hanging out under all the trees in the yard. Think I'll keep the fowl tractor by the house with a covered run attached for the little guys then figure they are on their own once free ranging away from the house. WAIT! this gives me a reason to build another fowl tractor!!! (I say fowl because I have from bantams to turkeys!!
