I loved reading your story! I lived in Fort Worth until I was 13 years old, but I told my dad when I was 4 or 5 years old, that when I grew up, I was going to move out to the country and live on a big farm. I always knew I would want chickens, but until I got some this year, I had no idea how much I would love them! I have named every one of them. Yes, this makes it harder to cull them when the time comes, but it is easier when I have to let my husband know what is going on with our birds. Earlier today, he came in the house and said, "I may have given the chickens some treats." He had the biggest smile on his face, and I could tell, he did give them treats. It is a joy to watch them hunt bugs, scratch around and dust bathe. The eggs are a big plus too! Here's to your continued joy in raising chickens!!!
What a great story, It brought back some fond memories of my Uncle Tom Friel who also would pick me up to take to his farm when I was a young lad. He also taught me a lot about farm animals and their care, loved that man.
When I went into the Air Force he came to the train depot to see me off, I had never seen that man shed a tear. I now raise chickens for eggs, meat and to have around being silly, 2 guinea hens are the yard clowns. Thanks for your story and for the memories of our Uncle Tom's.
I was raised on main street in a small river town in Wisconsin. My joy was traveling to grandma's farm on weekends! All of the animals and particulary the chickens were so much fun! I knew one day I would live in the country. Here we are on a 10 acre hobby farm! We have been here 38 years and have had chickens most of those years. We started with Bantys. I love watching them in their little social groups and really enjoy how the mama's protect their babies. (Watch out Rottweiller & Golden!) We just have one banty silkie cross, 1 ameracana female, 3silkie females, one gorgeous sillkie rooster & 2 silkie babies. Our grandchildren enjoy them as much as out children did when they were growing up! Country living works for me!
