4H and Fair Auctions as a source for new blood?

At the end of the county fair their is typically an auction of the animals.

Do any of you source your new blood by buying up the best of show or best looking hens / roosters?

Seems like a win/win. I would be supporting local agriculture and the 4H. And I would be getting some birds that are already proven to be of top quality.

I don't but a lot of people do.

The only issue I see would be to ask yourself what your goals are. Breeders that select for traits that get them 'best in show' quality will lose the traits that most people keep chickens for. One of those is egg production. Those big show birds, IMHO, don't lay well.
