Hi. My name is Kelly, I'm known as Lily's Mom. Lily is 5 and just started 4H, hatching and raising her own chickens. We live in Northern California and my family has a winery and vineyards. The chickens have a big old coop that we plan to fix up a bit. (switching from straw to sand bedding).

They get to free range during the day. Right now there are two chickens in the coop, that belong to Grandma, and Lily's chicks are 3 weeks old in an indoor brooder. We are new to raising chickens but I grew up with ducks and geese ( I just don't remember much 'cuz I was little). We hatched 4 Lavender Orpington's. I'm thinking of adding a few Polish to the mix for added humor.

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

I just love living in Northern Ca.

Your lavs are cute, but your daughter is such a beauty! :love

Feel free to bring in a plug of dirt (grass, roots, and all) to the brooder babes. It gives them huge enrichment value plus helps to produce some immunity to thing out in the pasture. My chicks are making short day trips definitely by 3 weeks old when it isn't raining or super windy. I just give a huddle box for them to stay warm... with some confinement for their safety until they know where safety is.

Glad you found us, this site has changed my chicken keeping life FOREVER! :thumbsup

SO TRUE!!!! i am getting lavender Orpingtons and polish on Thursday! also some silkies and frizzles!

from a local high quaility breeder. try craigslist! of course i live up in Washington state and everybody has chickens so they ight be easier to find, but there are also a lot more people in your area. also, my family lived in California for 9 years! my mom, dad, brother and sister were born there, but i am i true washintonian and proud of it!!! you can order some nice polish from purely poultry, meyer or MPC. but purely poultry is the only place that will ship all the colors together! Good Luck!!!:highfive::clap
